The ice cube cometh… but how?
Causes of hollow or small ice cubes.

Your icemaker may make small or hollow cubes if it's not supplied with enough water. This may also cause the icemaker to cycle before the cubes are completely frozen.

To repair this problem, turn off the water supply to the refrigerator and remove the water supply line from the water inlet valve. The inlet valve is located where the water supply line connects to the refrigerator, usually behind the refrigerator near the floor.

Put the end of the water line in a bucket and turn the water supply on. There should be a good stream of water jetting from the tube. If not, the water supply valve on the household plumbing system is probably plugged. Try clearing out any obstruction, and if that doesn't work, replace the valve. If there is a good stream, the water inlet valve the water line connects to probably needs to be replaced.

Enter the model number of your refrigerator into our PartDetective or contact us for the item number of the replacement water valve.

*Note: Reverse Osmosis (R/O) systems should never be used to supply water to icemakers as they do not provide enough volume.

Fun facts
Sea ice is about as salty as the ice in your freezer. Although sea ice is made from salty sea water, the salt molecules are rejected back into the liquid as ice forms. There isn't much room for salt molecules to be trapped in the close-knit structure of sea ice.
